Umbrellas 101: Everything You Need to Know
Small, medium or large canopy? Base or table? Crank, lever or pulley? Don’t worry... we have all the answers.
Read More- What are the different types of umbrellas? Our umbrellas fall into one of three categories: Market, Cantilever and Designer Umbrella. Market umbrellas are the quintessential patio umbrella, and are available in various sizes, pole finishes and canopy colors. Cantilever umbrellas are perfect for larger dining and seating areas, and are designed to provide maximum shade. Designer umbrellas offer the same great features with extra style through specially designed canopies – such as handpainted patterns and edge treatments – and a selection of pole finishes.
- How heavy does my umbrella base need to be? The weight of your umbrella base is determined by the size of your umbrella canopy. Slim profile base should only be used when an umbrella is paired with a dining table. For a freestanding umbrella (in other words, not in a table), you will need a 50 lb. base for a 7-1/2 ft. or 9 ft. umbrella and a 100 lb.+ base for an 11 ft. umbrella.
- What size umbrella do I need for my round dining table? The diameter of your umbrella should at least match the diameter of your dining table. For optimal sun protection, choose an umbrella diameter that extends two feet beyond the table.
- What size umbrella do I need for my seating area? If you’re trying to cover a singular seating area like a pair of lounge chairs or your favorite spot on the sofa, choose a canopy that extends two feet over the area in question. When you need to cover a larger area, a side mount/cantilever umbrella provides optimal sun protection.
- What size umbrella do I need for my rectangular dining table? We recommend our rectangular market umbrella or a cantilever umbrella for rectangular dining tables.
- What size umbrella do I need for a pair of chaises? A 7-1/2 ft. umbrella is a great size for placement between two chaise lounge chairs.
- Can I take your market umbrellas to the beach? Our market umbrellas are much more substantial than beach umbrellas and are specifically designed to be used with an umbrella base or a table.
- Are your umbrella fabrics fade-, mildew- and UV-resistant? Most of our umbrella canopies are made from 100% Sunbrella solution-dyed fabric that’s extreme tested for resistance to fading, staining and mildew. This ultra-durable fabric was actually awarded the Seal of Recommendation by the Skin Cancer Foundation for providing up to 98% UV protection.
- Can any of your umbrellas be customized? Our Market umbrellas are available in a wide variety of stocked and special-order fabrics, so it’s easy to create a custom umbrella that perfectly matches your outdoor decor.
- Can I provide my own fabric for my umbrella canopy? We do not offer this service at this time.
- Do your umbrellas have vented canopies? Yes, our umbrella canopies feature integrated vents that allow hot air to circulate and add stability during sudden gusts of wind.
- Do you sell replacement canopies for my existing umbrella? We offer a variety of replacement canopies that allow you to tailor your umbrella to match the season or your current design style. Click here to explore our complete collection.
- Do all of your umbrellas tilt and swivel? The aluminum frames of our 7 1/2', 9' and 11' Market umbrellas have the ability to tilt. All of our Cantilever umbrellas feature 360° swivel bases, and most of them also have tilting canopies.
- Do your umbrellas require a lot of assembly? This varies from item to item. Specific information about assembly can be found on each umbrella’s description page.
- How should I store my umbrella when not in use? We recommend that you close your umbrella when it’s not in use … especially during windy conditions. For off-season protection, our durable umbrella covers (sold separately) are made from 100% solution-dyed polyester fabric that provides exceptional protection in all types of weather.
