The Art of the Bar stool: Exacting Design and Superior Comfort

When discussing bar stools, we believe in love at first sit. That’s why we take each design decision so seriously.

While we know appearances are important, long-term livability is just as significant. At Frontgate, each new bar stool requires the careful consideration of style, comfort and artisanship – and the acumen of experts at every step.

“Every bar stool is thoughtfully designed with you in mind, from the aesthetic to the dimensions, the type of materials being used, the finishes, the upholstery and more,” says Kelly Rotheiser, who works in product development. “We pour our passion and devotion into every product.”

We pride ourselves on the craftsmanship and quality of every bar stool, made to specifications superior to industry standards. Each boasts its own artistry – hand-carved details on Meyer Lemons, textures like the cane back of Georgia, or the mixed metal finishes on Angelina Backless.

It takes at least a year for each new stool to go from concept to production. Whether trying to update a classic style or hearing customers’ calls for a new low-back profile, our design team considers both comfort and aesthetic appeal. Then sketches begin, with careful consideration given to the stool’s proportions and materials.

With computer-aided design and/or 3D modeling, projects progress to the sampling stage. It takes about four months to produce a high-quality sample. Two or three rounds of revisions, each requiring the careful production of new samples, perfect the design.

All wood stools are durably crafted of kiln-dried hardwoods. Depending on the stool’s design, techniques such as mortise-and-tenon joinery, dovetail joinery or double-doweled corner blocking are employed to provide lasting stability. Each is tip- and weight-tested to meet the highest industry standards.

Upholstered seats are stuffed with high-density, high-resiliency foam with a soft fiberfill wrap, meaning you’ll comfortably settle in, but the seat will bounce back when you get up. Concerned about spills or stains? A range of performance-treated fabrics and top-grain leathers provides peace of mind.

“We want to provide a quality piece that adds style to any kitchen or bar while being exceptionally comfortable and used every day by everyone in the family,” Rotheiser says.

Our selection ranges from traditional to modern, with an extensive array of upholstery, choices of counter and bar heights, and profiles that include low-back and backless. When you’re ready to shop, explore our Bar Stool Guide to determine which style is right for you.
