Rug Layering 101

layered rugs

Two controversial–but intriguing!–words: layered rugs. Hey, we get it: Rug layering is often a tricky feat best left to the professionals … but that doesn’t mean you can’t pull off the look in your own home. With a few tried and true rules, you can easily advance the style of your living room or find a second life for a too-small area rug you can’t bear to part with. Read on to see all the hows and whys of rug layering, and you’ll soon be on your way.

YOU CAN’T GO WRONG WITH A NEUTRAL BASE

Natural fiber rugs, like sisal or jute, provide a neutral base most rugs can pop against. The contrast in color is similar to that of a wood floor, making this an easy entrance to the rug layering world. Top off your natural fiber rug with handcrafted wool, shag, sheepskin or hide.

PATTERN MIXING RULES APPLY

The same rules you’d apply to mixing patterns in your pillows or bedding work for rugs. Stick to similar color families and drastically different scales for a guaranteed fit. Remember, the rugs should complement each other but be different enough to still create an impact.

A TOUCH OF THE UNEXPECTED

Use a small rug as an accent to a larger rug to add a pop of unexpected color, pattern or texture to the space. This works best when using a large neutral rug as your base.
