Bring it Home: Learn How to Measure for a Hassle-Free Furniture Delivery

You’ve found the perfect new sofa or chair for your space … congratulations! But before you finalize your order, you’ll need to make sure that your new furniture will fit through the doorways, halls and stairwells inside your home. Here’s what you need to do to ensure a hassle-free delivery.

Double check all of the furniture dimensions

Our website provides you with the (A) width, (B) depth (C) height and (D) diagonal depth of every piece of furniture. This is your starting point, so be sure to write these measurements down.

Measure your room

To make sure that the furniture you’re considering works in your space, it’s a good idea to use masking tape, painter’s tape or kraft paper cut to the size of the new item to map out the spot where it will live. Simply use the width, depth and height listed on our website to make sure you’re happy with the fit.

Measure along the delivery path

Use a tape measure to determine the height, width and diagonal depth of every area that the furniture must pass through, including doorways, halls and stairwells. Also, be sure to check the amount of entry clearance you have (the space between the doorway and the opposite wall).

  • For doorways, be sure to measure the (A) width and (B) height inside your door frame. If your door does not open wide enough, you may want to have it removed from its hinges prior to delivery.
  • For stairwells, be sure to take (C) handrails or posts into consideration.
  • For hallways, check for (D) low-hanging light fixtures or architectural details that can impede your delivery.
  • If an elevator is required to reach your apartment or condominium, you will need to measure the elevator doorway and interior.

Compare measurements

Next, compare the dimensions of the furniture with the measurements along your delivery path. The height, width or depth of your furniture must be less than any of your doorway, hallway or stairway width measurements – preferably by several inches. Diagonal depth is also useful when determining if sofas or chairs can be brought through tighter doorways at an angle. If you have enough clearance for delivery, then you’re ready to order!
