Passion for Perfection: How Really Great Furniture is Made

At Frontgate, our upholstered furniture collections embody our relentless quest for quality. Did you know most sofas are built to last about seven years? Ours are created to last much longer.

We craft each collection with bench-made artistry, individually producing every sofa with a core team of artisans. We make intensive decisions during each step of the design, then crisscross the globe to continually monitor the labor-intensive process of creation. We use only the industry’s finest materials and construction techniques. Ultimately, the quality is in what you see … and what you don’t.

We start with a strong suspension system, always employing either eight-way hand-tied coils or sinuous springs. Most of our sofas and chairs feature rows of heat-tempered, double-coil steel springs that are tied together eight times: from front to back, side to side, and diagonally. This establishes tension between the coils, allowing them to flex together. Our lower-profile sofas and chairs feature non-sag sinuous coil springs. Each method ensures seating comfort while creating stability, so your furniture won’t be sagging in spots after a few years.

Next is a frame durably constructed of kiln-dried hardwood. Kiln drying removes moisture, guarding against warping and cracking to ensure that your sofa or chair will be part of your life for years to come. That’s why we proudly back every hardwood frame with an exceptional 10-year structural frame warranty.

All corner blocks are double-doweled and glued for stability. By contrast, sofas with joints simply screwed together risk breaking when dropped or jolted … imagine the possibilities on moving day. Remember, if a frame cracks, you can’t get inside a sofa to fix it.

Our cushions are plush and comfortable, and they’ll stay that way. Each cushion’s high-resiliency, high-density foam core is wrapped in a layer of feather and down for exceptional softness.

Our supple, top-grain leathers are hand-tanned, then aniline-dyed for consistent coloration. If you prefer fabrics, we stock hand-tailored velvets, flax linens and more, all with a fine hand. On tufted sofas such as Barrow, Wendover and Sorrento, we sew the material into a pattern to give it a pronounced tuft, and then finish it with buttons. All nailheads are carefully hand-hammered, while competitors often use connected strips (with few actual nails) that are only lightly tacked.

Assembling furniture entirely by hand requires a passion for perfection. The result is well-built, comfortable, maintenance-free seating – furniture that lasts. Furniture that promises to be part of your family for years to come.

Upholstery with Options

We know you like choices, so each of our striking sofas and chairs come in over 100 colors and patterns. Choose from top-grain leather, rich velvet, plush chenille or hand-tailored linen – whichever look suits your style.

High-density Cushion

Surrounding multiple layers of high-density foam is an outer layer of feathers and down that keep our cushions plush and comfortable without the need for constant fluffing and adjusting.

Hand-tied Springs

We start with a strong suspension system, always employing either eight-way hand-tied coils or sinuous springs to ensure seating comfort while creating stability that keeps springs from shifting. Meaning your sofa won’t be sagging in spots after a few years.

Kiln-dried Frame

Hardwood frames are kiln-dried to eliminate moisture and guard against warping and cracking to ensure that they’ll be a part of your life for years to come. That’s why we proudly back every hardwood frame with an exceptional 10-year structural frame warranty.
