New Ways to Decorate with Greenery

The holidays are all about celebrating and enjoying family traditions – unpacking heirloom ornaments as a family; going on a drive to see the best light displays; a pancake breakfast on Christmas morning. But one area we’re always looking to change things up a bit is the holiday decor. So, while we’d never forgo using Grandma’s tried-and-true sugar cookie recipe, we have no qualms with hanging our greenery in new, unexpected places. It’s just one way we bring a touch of magic to the holidays.

This year, we have found some creative ways to use wreaths, garlands, stems and sprays.

Wreaths

Wreaths aren’t just for the front door. Why not hang one from a coordinating ribbon in front of a little-used cabinet door in the kitchen? This is a low effort way to bring a lot of cheer to a room that isn’t often decorated for the holidays.

While it’s common to hang a wreath over the fireplace mantel, hanging one above a shelf feels extra special. On a deeper ledge, the wreath can lean against the wall and be nestled in with other holiday decor. On a thinner shelf, hang the wreath on a hook for stability.

And last but not least, hanging a wreath in front of a mirror in the living room or entry makes a big impact in two ways. It’s unexpected, yes, but the mirror also reflects the wreath ornaments and lights for an even bigger impact.

Garlands

Every dinner table is merrier with a tablescape – and a length of garland provides the perfect base for a grand display (or is merry enough on its own for a more pared back look).

And who says you have to stop at the dining table? Stretch garland across flat surfaces ranging from the bar to the credenza and even the coffee table for an especially festive look.

Tree Stems and Sprays

These pieces of holiday decor are small but mighty in their versatility. Stems can be attached to everything ranging from a doorknob to a wrapped gift. Should you find yourself with a handful left over after decorating, gather them together to create a seasonal arrangement in your favorite vase.
